Set within the charm of an older bungalow, this contemporary renovation introduces a fresh industrial perspective that transforms the living experience into a space reminiscent of an art gallery in New York. The clients envisioned a functional kitchen and entertaining area that would showcase their vibrant collection of artwork—colourful pieces that need a strong yet subtle backdrop to truly shine. They aimed for a design that not only accommodated their busy professional lives but also provided a practical space for their teenagers, complete with a stylish wine bar for hosting gatherings with friends and family. As true art lovers, they desired a modern, understated aesthetic that would complement their artwork while exuding an industrial vibe, softened by thoughtful design elements.

With meticulous attention to detail, interior designer Katie Scott, founder of Sticks+Stones Design, reconfigured the kitchen, dining, and living areas to foster a more open and user-friendly layout. Navigating the irregular lines inherent in the older bungalow style home presented challenges. Installation required precise positioning, and the cabinetry required clever integration around the existing skylight and beams running across the length of the ceiling.

At the heart of the transformation is a striking porcelain island, designed to resemble a solid box, echoing the look of concrete with a soft, matte finish that invites touch. In a bold focal point, the industrial theme is beautifully brought to life with a custom black steel light, expertly handcrafted by Firefish Fabrication

This eyecatching light fixture, designed by Katie, elegantly spans the length of the island, providing illumination while grounding the space with a distinctive industrial flair. Katie recalls the inspiration for the fixture with a smile, noting, “It was a true lightbulb moment. I sketched the idea, and Firefish crafted it to perfection. They excel in details and the creation of customized, one-off pieces. It had to be very strong and carefully installed to ensure the structure did not bow.”

This reliable source for custom steel fabrication undoubtedly contributes to the signature style of Sticks+Stones, known for integrating striking bespoke steel elements into their designs.

The paper lantern-like Bloom pendant over the dining table with its distinctive elliptical shade harmoniously blends a finely perforated mesh core with frosted blown glass, casting a warm, inviting glow into the room. Designed by Tim Rundle for Resident, sourced from Simon James.

Another standout feature of the space is the wine bar, with a full height wine fridge seamlessly integrated into the layout. Originally intended as a simple small fridge, it evolved into a stylish focal point for entertaining, combining functionality with flair, perfectly reflecting the homeowners’ lifestyle.

The introduction of an additional skylight, coupled with a thoughtfully curated selection of materials, has transformed the once dark kitchen into a light-filled oasis. The island centrepiece is elegantly surrounded by cabinetry exuding sophistication with its mineral tones. Elements like the aged iron finish of the tapware, the calming natural forms of the Ornamenta Brick Grigio Chiaro tiles paired with the sleek black Sirius Dekton panel on the splashback, complemented by the matte black sink from Blanco, work together to achieve a harmonious balance of strong lines and gentle softness, making the space feel both inviting and lived-in. Final touches, such as the Sketch Glide barstools from Soren Liv and the elliptical Bloom pendant from Simon James that hangs over the dining table, further enhance the softening of the overall industrial aesthetic.

The splashback features Ornamenta Brick Grigio Chiaro tiles from Artedomus, complemented by a sleek black Sirius Dekton panel from Dekton, all beautifully framed by Vidaspace Mineral veneer in Triba. Sleek black appliances and decor complete the elegant look.

The result is a functional space for cooking, studying, and entertaining, where the homeowners’ colorful art truly pops. The open-plan design fosters seamless flow, enhancing connectivity between spaces, and the owners are thrilled with the outcome. The project beautifully illustrates how modern industrial design can harmonize with the character of an older home, creating a space that not only meets the needs of its inhabitants but enriches their lives—thanks to the thoughtful artistry of Katie Scott and the Sticks+Stones team.
